June photo dump
Visual Diary - Working Projects
A selection of images edited over the month of May 2024
Another month goes by and I feel like my camera and I have fallen out.
The month started out with some spectacular mornings of peaceful mist as fresh green leaves and woodland flowers began to grow, and as time went on other important factors took over like sleep. Spring mornings are amazing but those early wake up calls for sunrise take their toll.
THE ART OF NOTICING
As you will be well aware of by now, the uk got to witness something very special. a strong solar storm whipping up the Northern Lights for us to witness in spectacular form.
Here are my images captured at Pitstone Windmill, The Chilterns Buckinghamshire.
Below are a number of images captured with my phone, which is how many of us will have captured this amazing sight and so well worth sharing mine.
Imagine two days in Brighton, where the sky is painted with a glorious shade of blue and the temperatures dip below freezing. As you wander through the streets, you find yourself captivated by the beauty of everyday life. You stroll from one charming shop to another, camera in hand, capturing the essence of the ordinary. The juxtaposition of the vibrant blue skies against the chilly air creates a sense of magic in the air. From the bustling streets to the quiet corners, I document the moments that often go unnoticed. Each photograph becomes a testament to the beauty that can be found in the simplicity of everyday life.
It's important to take a look at where you’ve come from rather than where you are going, I take so many images I find it hard to remember, where i’ve been what i’ve done. We experience so much within a year.
These images are just some from 2023, They may not even be my favourite images but they remind me of the year ive had.
"I have never taken a picture for any other reason than that at that moment it made me happy to do so."
Further to my idea of taking a moment and having a break… Here are some snap shots of my ‘FIREBREAK’ to Cornwall.
You will see some more over the coming weeks as I always struggle to work out where any of my costal images sit in amongst my woodland scenes.
I often think about where my photography sits in the world, I don’t tend to seek out those one single ‘banger’ shots.
I wonder through woodlands and open spaces capturing what I see, I feel at home in nature.
I am seemingly drawn to the mundane and the simple as well, fundamentally I just love to capture and document.
Autumn is a season that enchants photographers with its vibrant colours, soft golden light, and picturesque landscapes. From the fiery reds and oranges of autumn foliage to misty mornings and cozy scenes, this time of year offers endless photography opportunities. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced photographer, these tips will help you make the most of your autumn photos and capture the true essence of this beautiful season.
Capture the Changing Colours:
The vibrant colours of autumn foliage are one of the main attractions of this season. Experiment with different white balance settings to enhance the warm hues or play around with exposure to capture the rich saturation of reds, oranges, and yellows. Consider using a polarising filter to reduce glare and enhance the colours further. Experimenting with these settings will help you capture the full beauty of the
Focus on Details
While grand landscapes are undoubtedly captivating, don't overlook the beauty of smaller details that autumn brings. Zoom in on fallen leaves, acorns, or dewdrops on spiderwebs to highlight the intricate patterns and textures. Macro photography can be particularly rewarding during this season, as you can capture the delicate veins of a leaf or the rich colours of a mushroom. By focusing on these details, you can create captivating images that evoke the feeling of autumn.
Use the Weather to Your Advantage
Autumn weather can be unpredictable, but it can also provide unique opportunities for stunning photographs. Overcast skies can create a soft, diffused light that enhances the colours and details of the landscape. Moody fog and mist can add an ethereal atmosphere to your images, transforming ordinary scenes into something extraordinary. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and embrace these conditions to add drama and depth to your autumn compositions.
Experiment with Composition
Autumn is a perfect time to experiment with various compositional techniques. Use leading lines, such as a winding path or a river, to guide the viewer's eye through the image. Incorporate the rule of thirds to create a balanced composition, or try framing your subject with surrounding foliage to add depth and interest. Don't be afraid to get creative and try different angles or perspectives to capture the unique beauty of autumn.
I feel like i’ve really neglected my local patch over the summer this year, but as the seasons change my photography juices get all fired up again and i’m sure I won’t be able to keep away.
The best camera you own is the one you carry.
Although as you’d expect I own a number of cameras and lenses and even with the recent addition of a Canon GX7ii I still find my phone is the device I often reach for first.

After exploring the fascinating world of photography zines and handmade books, I recently come across a delightful discovery—a charming 8-page zine crafted from a single print.
What makes this creation truly special is its simplicity. Of course, it does require owning a printer, which may not be as common place nowadays. However, if you have a passion for photography or enjoy creating zines, I highly recommend considering the value of owning a printer in some capacity. It opens up endless possibilities for sharing your art and ideas with others.

This Monday morning stroll along the river was more than just a walk. It was a journey that allowed me to connect with the soul of the town, to appreciate the beauty of nature amidst urban chaos, and to start my week on a refreshing note. As I watched the town come alive, I felt a renewed sense of appreciation for the simple joys of life and the beauty that surrounds us if we take the time to notice.
So, the next time you find yourself dreading the mundane Monday mornings, take a walk along the river. Let the tranquillity envelop you, let the beauty inspire you, and let the new week welcome you with a warm, radiant sunrise and the gentle lullaby of the river.
